Start with a pickup from your accommodation in Akureyri. Drive east from Akureyri, cross Eyjafjörður fjord, and enjoy the view of the town, the ocean, and the mountains surrounding the fjord. After a half-hour drive, arrive at the picturesque Goðafoss Waterfall, which plays an important role in Icelandic history, particularly in connection with the introduction of Christianity. From there, go on an amazing journey through areas of extreme contrasts, bird life, flora, lava fields, geothermal activity, geology, and saga. The first stop at the Lake Mývatn area is the picturesque Skútustaðagígar Psuedo Craters, formed from explosions when the flowing hot lava met with the ice-cold water from the lake. Enjoy the great panoramic view of the area. Afterward, arrive at Dimmuborgir Lava Fields, full of lava pillars and formations that are rich in mythical sagas and ghoulish trails. Next, drive to the warm underground river in Grjótagjá Rift, where the rift between the Eurasian and American Continents is very visible. The final stop by Lake Mývatn is at Námafjall and the geothermal area of Hverir Mud Pools, with steaming fumaroles, boiling mud pools, and sulfur pits. In the summertime, visit the Mt. Krafla volcano area and Víti explosion crater but in winter time this visit depends on weather and road conditions. Before returning to Akureyri, visit the Mývatn Nature Baths. The baths are located in between lava fields where you can soak in a relaxing geothermal lagoon. Entry to the Mývatn Nature Baths is not included in the tour. Arrive at the Nature Baths at 2:00 PM it is possible to buy a ticket at the lobby upon arrival, however, tickets can sell out, so it is highly recommended to book tickets in advance.
